Food Security

By, Abdullahi Alhassan, Kaduna

The Network of Peace Journalists Kaduna (NPJK) is urging the federal government to declare a state of emergency on food security in the country.

Mallam Ibrahim Yakubu, the team leader of NPJK, highlighted the escalating economic challenges faced by Nigerians, particularly women and children, emphasizing the need for urgent measures to address the high cost of living.

Yakubu attributed the surge in prices to the removal of fuel subsidy, impacting various aspects of Nigerians' lives.

He called for practical solutions to ease the ongoing hardships and proposed a meeting between state governors and President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on food security.

Expressing concern over the holy month of Ramadan being exploited by marketers to hoard goods, Yakubu pleaded for sufficient palliatives, as the current assistance is deemed insufficient.

He stressed that the economic hardship is contributing to youth battles with depression, urging the government to address these challenges promptly.

With the recent removal of fuel subsidy, naira depreciation, impending electricity tariff increase, and the introduction of Value Added Tax on diesel, the NPJK appealed to the federal government to take immediate action.

They also called on philanthropists to provide support to the less privileged through adequate palliatives, recognizing the urgency of practical solutions to alleviate the hardships faced by citizens.
